1. What is a freestanding fridge?

A freestanding fridge is a standalone appliance that can be placed anywhere in your kitchen with a power socket and enough space for ventilation. Unlike integrated models, which are hidden behind matching cupboard doors, freestanding fridges are fully visible and designed to be on display, making them easy to move if you ever decide to redesign your kitchen layout.

2. How much ventilation space do I need to leave around a freestanding fridge?

To keep your fridge running efficiently and prevent the motor from overworking, it needs room to breathe. As a general rule, you should leave a gap of at least 2cm to 5cm at the sides and back, and about 2cm at the top. Skimping on this clearance space can cause the appliance to use more electricity and may shorten its lifespan over time.

4. What is a "Flame Retardant Backing" on a fridge?

This is an essential safety feature found on all modern refrigeration appliances sold in the UK and Ireland. It means the rear panel covering the cooling mechanics is made from fire-resistant material—typically metal or heavy-duty flame-retardant aluminium-foil plastic—rather than the flammable materials used in older legacy appliances. That’s why it’s important that a freestanding fridge isn’t placed against the wall.

5. Can I keep a freestanding fridge in an unheated garage or outbuilding?

Standard fridges are designed to operate in ambient room temperatures between 10°C and 43°C. If a standard fridge is placed in a freezing cold garage, the external thermostat can become confused, causing the appliance to stop cooling properly and potentially spoiling the food inside. If you want one for the garage, a chest fridge-freezer might be a better option.

6. What are "reversible doors" and why do they matter?

A reversible door means the hinges and handles can be swapped from the right side to the left side during installation. This is an incredibly handy feature for freestanding fridges because it gives you total flexibility over which way the door swings, ensuring it won't block walkways, hit walls, or bump into nearby cupboards in tight kitchen spaces.
